CITIES
Cities are a major, global phenomenon: most people today live in cities, 80% in Europe, probably marginally less in the rest of the world. But cities do not make for sameness, contrary to what the displaced countryfolks of a generation ago had thought. Cities differ, sometimes immensely, they grow a character of their own.
Within a given country, some common traits can be found, though, and they are the new essential feature of national or regional identities.
Cities are so much a part of our lives that we tend to take them for granted, and forget that they are full of surprises and worthy of study.
In the following pages, a few animated images will highlight the main issues for the student of English in a very simple, but fundamental way.
The structure of urban space structures our lives and ways of life.
Our cityscape is our horizon.
